Harry S. Truman, a Missouri Senator, was elected vice president with Franklin Roosevelt in 1944. Only three months after taking office, Truman was thrust into the presidency when Roosevelt died. Truman approved the first use of nuclear weapons against Japan in August 1945, hoping to end World War II quickly and reduce casualties. He also acted to contain the spread of world Communism, beginning the "Cold War" with the Soviet Union. In 1948 he was elected to a full term as president. In 1950 when Communist North Korea invaded U.S. ally South Korea, he rallied the United Nations to repel the invaders, beginning a conflict that would continue through the rest of his term. Truman was admired for his plain-spoken manner and his willingness to take responsibility for difficult decisions. Includes color illustrations, a timeline, boxed features on events and people of special interest, and lively text introducing the featured president and the times in which he lived.
