The kid: Considered one of Charlie Chaplin's best films, The Kid also made a star of little Jackie Coogan, who plays a boy cared for by The Tramp when he's abandoned by his mother, Edna (Edna Purviance). Later, Edna has a change of heart and circumstances and aches to be reunited with her son. When she finds him and wrests him from The Tramp, it makes for what turned out be one of the most heart-wrenching scenes ever included in a comedy. Tillie's punctured romance: Charlie Chaplin plays a street-smart con artist in this silent film -- Hollywood's first feature-length comedy. Charlie woos a country girl named Tillie (Marie Dressler), convincing her to take her father's money and run off to the city with him. Once there, Charlie leaves Tillie and goes back to his old sweetie (Mabel Normand). Charlie eventually returns, but his wandering eye sends everyone into an uproarious pie-tossing frenzy.
